  1. Middle Ages. There is hundreds of years of history and social development during this time. The growth of monarchies and development of arms and warfare that shaped Europe for hundreds of years.

  3. WWI. The first world war changed how people thought about global conflict. So many people died not just from warfare but from sickness and disease.

  7. War of Independence. This was the war the allowed us to create our nation independent of another nations control.
  8. Civil Rights Movement. Civil rights movement is very important to American History. It is important time about dealing with the equality between black and white Americans.
  9. Great Depression. This important time because it made the government change its way of thinking about the role of government and how it should interact/help it's citizens.
  10. Bill of Rights. This is an important document that gave personal freedom to the citizens and limited the government's involvement in the everyday lives of it's citizens.
  11. Holocaust. This was a horrible part of world history that should remind us of the horrors of war. This should be taught to help us remember that this should never happen again.
  12. Civil War. This showed how America was split before the War and is the largest loss of American life in our history.
  13. Creating the Constitution. This is important to show what the founding fathers were thinking when our nation.
  14. Westward Expansion. The movement of Americans west. This shows how we, as Americans, are always looking for new opportunities.
  15. Reconstruction. This shows how as a nation we tried to become whole again. It shows that there was still a lot of resentment over the war.
  16. Spanish-American War. This war helped to propel the nation to a new status as a world power.
  17. Vietnam. The most controversial war that the US participated up to this point. IT was a war that was to stop the spread of communism to another nation.
  18. American Geography. It is important to students to know the land forms of the land we live on.
  19. Roaring Twenties. This is important to show how the US adjusted to peace after WWI. This is good to show how America changed after the war.
  20. Cold War. This shows a nation at war but not with by actively fighting. This is about a nuclear arms race between two nation that encompasses multiple nations.
  21. Terrorism in the US. This is important to show how Americans have dealt this attack on our soul. 9/11 is important to show how the US was hurt and how we reacted.
  22. Iraq War. This is the most recent war the US has been apart of. This war is the result of 9/11.
  23. Native Americans. These individuals should be studied for they were here before the Europeans. They knew this land better than anyone They are ingrained in American History by all the things that has happened to them.
  24. Declaration of Independence. It stated to the British Government that we were not going to be a part of the British Empire any longer. We are our own people.
  25. Presidents. Students should study these men. These men were apart of the worst and best of our history. To look into the decision making process of these men during these times will help to understand our own history as a nation.
  26. Korean War. This is during the time when US was trying to stop the spread of Communism from the rest of the world and shows what happens when super powers try to show their strength.
  27. U.S Senate. This is one of two parts of our legislative branch and students should know how it works in conjunction with the House of Representatives.
  28. House of Representatives. This is the other half of our legislative branch. These two parts create laws and students should know the process to which one becomes a representative.
  29. African American History. It is important to show the history of these individuals. These men and women created our nation to what it is today. It is important for students to know what horrors they faced so they are not repeated to anyone else.
  30. Women's Rights. This is important to show the turning point for women in our nation. They wants rights that men at the time had. This shows women taking a more active role in government and the decision making process.
  31. Pirates. North Carolina has a lot of history of pirates using it's shores to as a base. Showing accurate account of pirates like Blackbeard and what they considered treasure would be very insightful to students.
  32. Japanese Internment Camps. Few Americans know or even remember that we had the Japanese put into camps during WWII. Students need to know that we as a nation are not perfect and that we should sometimes do things that is not ethical to other people.
  33. The Lord Proprietors and early North Carolina Governing. It is important for students to know who early North Carolina government was run. Having students learn about this form and time allows them to see the evolution of North Carolina Government.
  34. "Rip Van Winkle." It is important for students to know that North Carolina developed at a slower rate than the rest of the colonies due to little access to to harbors. Students can see the effects of this slow development has had on North Carolina today.
  35. Prohibition. This period was full of crime due to citizens not legally being allowed to produce or consume alcohol. This time frame shows how organized crime grew to encompass many things in the US and North Carolina economy.
  36. The Movement of Native Americans to Reservations. This is a horrible time for the US. Where the government forcibly moved Native Americans through the Trail of Tears to Reservations. Many Native Americans lost their lives on this force march.
  37. French and Indian War. This is one of the many early wars that the US was a part of before we became our own nation. It is important to show how we, as Americans, were involved in this war and the how this helped our nation push for Independence.
  38. Development of the Railroad. This is a very important innovation in US history. The railroads allowed citizen to travel and move goods across far off areas.
  39. The Gold Rush. The Gold Rush helped to motivate people to move to the Western United States. It helped int he development of cities and towns in those States.
  40. Judicial Branch. This is the branch of government that enforces and enacts the laws that are created by our leaders. These individuals also helps to check and balance the other two branches of government to make sure that they do not exceed their authority. It is important for students to know how this branch works and how enforces the laws.

  1. George Washington. This man was our first President and the General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. All student should know of this man and the impact he had on American History.
  2. Blackbeard. Pirating is a large part of North Carolina history and every student should explore what was life like as a pirate. This man is an infamous pirate and the Queen Ann's Revenge is wrecked off North Carolina's coastline.
  3. Martin Luther King Jr. This man had a big impact on the Civil Right's Movement. This man pushed to end Racism and Segregation in the US.
  4. Fredrick Douglas. This man was once a slave who fought to end slavery and was a important leader to end slavery in the US.
  5. Sir Walter Raleigh. This man sponsored the first European settlement in North Carolina. This man had a great impact on the State's history even though he never actually traveled to North Carolina.
  6. Abraham Lincoln. The fifteenth president of the United States. He led the United States during the Civil War and enacted the Emancipation Proclamation. He was assassinated during his presidency and helped to stop slavery in America.
  7. Malcolm X. He was a African American human rights activist. He fought for the rights of blacks and pushed whites to think about what they did to African Americans throughout history.
  8. Henry Ford. A major American industrialist that founded the Ford Motor Company and helped in the development of the assembly line. Made automobiles more affordable to the everyday American.
  9. Harriette Tubman. She was an African American leader of the Underground Railroad. She help slaves run North to safety.
  10. Thomas Jefferson. He was a founding father and the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He oversaw the purchase of the Louisiana Territory.
